An overview


At the infrastructural level, the Italian network of motorways was 6,943 km in 2016, substantially stable compared with the number of registered cars.

The railway network accounts for 27.6 km per 100,000 inhabitant, a figure that showed a slight increase in 2016 in relation to population; high-speed rail network accounts for 5.5% of the overall network.

In 2016, road freight transport generated 18.6 million tonne-kilometres of traffic (Tkm) per 10,000 inhabitants, a slight increase compared to 2015.

Air transport from and to national airports continued to register a recovery, thus confirming the positive trend of the previous year.

Cargo loaded and unloaded in cabotage transport showed an increase in 2016 recording a figure higher than that registered in 2011.

The car ownership rate reached 625 passenger cars per 1,000 inhabitants, thus incresing for the third year in a row.

In 2016 the number of deaths in road accidents registered a decrease after the increase of the previous year.
