An overview


Italian agriculture shows a reduction in the number of agricultural holdings land and an increase in the average farm size in terms of Uaa, resulting from the merger of companies. Labour, in terms of number of workers, is on a downward trend due to a decline in family labour, following the closure of small size, family-owned companies.

The agricultural sector is characterised by a prevalence of individual and self-managed enterprises; agricultural holdings constituted as companies are not significant in numerical terms, but, thanks to their larger sizes, show average enterprise values and typical ratios significantly higher than those of the target universe. In 2013 Italian agricultural holdings had a cost competitive power of 142.8 euro per 100 euro labour unit cost.

In 2014 the distribution of straight fertilisers in agriculture remained stable, whereas the use of active substances per hectare of utilized agricultural area (Uaa) increased.

High quality food products are confirmed to be a significant component of the Italian agricultural sector, a competitiveness factor among local agricultural enterprises , and a significant contributor to the development of mountain areas.

Agritourism confirms its structural upward trend, representing a key resource for the multifunctionality of businesses and for the national agricultural sector: between 2004 and 2014 agritourism farms increased by 55.1% and almost 36% were run by women.
